What is the fastest way to stop Windows 10 auto-updates? Windows OS is arguably the most popular desktop operating system in the world. The latest version of Windows OS is v.10. While Windows remains the best OS for many people, there’s one sad thing about the OS that leaves many people stranded and angry – it is Windows update.

By default, Windows is configured to update itself once you’re not on a “metered” network. The updates are quite necessary for your PC to run smoothly, but they could cost you a lot of data. So, I’m going to explain the quickest and easiest ways to disable Windows 10 updates.

Easiest and Fastest Way To Stop Windows 10 Auto-Updates

Method One: Set Your Network As “Metered Connection”

When you’re browsing on a “metered network,” Windows will pause all updates and synchronization tasks/services. So, if you noticed that Windows update has been running automatically in the background, switch your wi-fi network to “Metered.”

Note: this method only works when you’re connected to a wi-fi network.

Step One: Click the WiFi network icon on taskbar, and then click on “Network Settings.”

Step Two: Click on “Advanced Options” and toggle the switch. This will turn the active WiFi network into a metered connection and Windows Update will automatically stop running.

This method isn’t comprehensive. If you switch to another WiFi network, the updates will resume again. Below are more comprehensive ways to disable Windows 10 update permanently.

Method Two: Via Services

The buil-in “Services” utility on Windows 10 has the ability to permanently disable/stop Windows auto-updates. Simply follow the steps below:

  • Press Windows key + R, type services.msc into the “Run” box, and hit the “Enter” key (you need admin rights).
  • On the Windows “Services” page, click on a “service” and tap “W” on your keyboard (this will quickly get you to the “w” entries). Now, look out for Windows Update and click on it.
  • Look to the left pane, you will notice two options, “Stop” and “Restart,” click on “Stop.”
  • Alternatively, you can right-click or double-click on the “Windows Update” entry to access more settings.

Method Three: Group Policy Editor

  • Press Windows key + R, type gpedit.msc, and hit the “Enter” key.
  • Go to “Computer Configuration” >>> “Administrative Templates” >>> “Windows Components.”
  • Now, scroll down and look out for “Windows Update,” when you see it, double-click to open.
  • Again, check for “Configure Automatic Updates“and double-click on it
  • Click “Disabled” or “Not Configured” and save the settings.

You may need to restart the PC for this configuration to be effective. This is another fastest way to stop Windows 10 auto-updates.

Summary:

Hope I actually listed the fastest way to stop Windows 10 auto-updates? These methods are surefire – they have been tried and confirmed by many people out there (including me). I actually prefer the “metered connection” option because it’s more straightforward.

If you’re using one WiFi network to browse on the computer, then “Method One” can be you best bet. Nevertheless, you can add many WiFi networks are “Metered Connection.” Windows 10 Update is one of the most annoying issue faced by many. Well, Microsoft can’t just disable the feature because the updates actually address bug fixes, patches, etc.
